Dentures are artificial teeth fitted onto a framework that allow a person to speak, and chew food naturally, which otherwise is not possible because of missing teeth.

Dentures are basically of 2 types:

Removable

Fixed

Based on the number of teeth being replaced, they can be:

Partial denture

Full denture
- Bone and Tissue supported denture
- Implant supported denture

PARTIAL DENTURE

Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth. Support is obtained from adjacent teeth with help of metal extensions (clasps). Material used for fabrication is acrylic.

DISADVANTAGES

Exposure of metal extension which is unappealing

Damage to adjacent teeth during insertion and removal of denture

Some patients may develop allergy to acrylic material

Heavier and more rigid in nature

Now to overcome these disadvantages, a newer advancement has been developed. It is the flexible denture.

COMPLETE DENTURE

Complete dentures replace entire complement of missing natural teeth. Support is obtained only from underlying tissues & ridges (bone).

REMOVABLE COMPLETE DENTURE

The disadvantage with this kind of dentures is that they will be loose. They will be uncomfortable while speaking, chewing and drinking water. These dentures can be given for patients with more medical complications where invasive treatments are contraindicated and when underlying supporting structures are intact.

IMPLANT SUPPORTED COMPLETE DENTURE

They are one of the latest advancements in dentistry and a great boon for complete denture wearers. They obtain support from implants which are placed in the bone. The procedure is so simple that it can be done in local anaesthesia most of the times. The individual has to undergo simple clinical examination, radiographs and blood investigations.
